Tube wells in Mannar District to be restored

Tube wells in Mannar District to be restored

The Mannar District Agriculture Committee at its monthly meeting held on June 26 at the Mannar Kachcheri with the Mannar Government Agent presiding over, decided to restore the nearly one hundred tube well network within the stretch of farmlands under the Giant Tank to provide irrigation water facilities for the Yala paddy cultivations. During the current Yala season around 7,000 acres have been cultivated with paddy. Paddy cultivation in the Mannar District gives a very high yield and is considered as the Rice Bowl of the country.
Mannar District Engineer Palitha Wickrematilaka enlightened the committee that although the Giant Tank has a water capacity level of 31,500 acre feet, as a result of the present drought the water level has dropped to a low 12,000 acre feet
