An HIV/AIDS death was reported at the Negombo Hospital raising concerns over the increasing number of deaths from the ‘silent
epidemic.’
The victim in his early forties has been working in a European country
for many years. Hospital sources said that he was admitted to the
hospital vomiting blood and died the same evening due to severe
symptoms of AIDS.
Sexually transmitted diseases have claimed 32 lives in 2011 and 19 in
2010. In 2011, 146 cases were reported and in 2010, 121 HIV cases were
reported with majority from Western, North-western and Central
provinces.
Director of Health Ministry’s National STD/AIDS Control Programme, Dr.
N. Edirisinghe said, Sri Lanka is vulnerable to an increase of spread
of HIV infection due to many factors including travelling overseas for
employment and education, tourism, and the increase in high risk
groups including female sex workers, homosexual males and those
injecting narcotics
